I’d like to buy an animal to help out the 4-H, but can’t really use the meat. What can I do?
You can donate the animal back to the 4-H Fair. If you choose to do this, indicate your decision to the auctioneer or the ring personnel a the time your final bid is taken. The animal will go into the auction ring to be auctioned a second time. The money that you originally bid on the animal will go to the youth owner and will be the child’s profit on that animal. The second bid made for that same animal will go as a donation to the 4-H Fair, a 501c(3) organization to be used to improve livestock areas.
What is the 4-H Small Animal Auction? What types of animals will be sold?
Market rabbits– individually and in pens of three. Market fowl– including broiler and roaster chickens in pens of three, ducks and geese in pens of three and turkey roasters sold individually.
I’d like to buy, but can’t be present at the auction
We will see to it that a bid is placed for you. A price per pound can be agreed upon ahead of time. To make arrangements, call: Corky Dockery, Auctioneer. (248)627-3852, or L.C. Scramlin, Fair Mgr. (248)634-8830 Click here to email the Fair Office
How do I buy animals?
Plan to arrive early. A sale catalog listing all animals, by weight, in order of sale, will be available auction day. This provides you with the opportunity to compare animals in the barn and to select several alternative animals to meet your needs. 4-H members will be available to preview their animals with you prior to sale. When an animal you would like to purchase is in the ring and at the price you desire, signal the auctioneer by raising your hand. If you receive the final bid, make sure the auctioneer has your name or number so that it can be announced and recorded.
Is there a registration procedure?
Registration begins 1/2 hour before sale time at the clerk’s table. You will need to provide your name, address, and phone number. After you have registered, find a seat in the special seating area.
The 4-H Small Animal Auction is the culmination of many 4-H member’s year long project efforts. This is the time when animals they have raised and cared for are sold to the public. It is the final step in their market animal project, where the maketing education aspects come to life.
Why should I purchase an animal from the 4-H Small Animal Auction?
1. To support and encourage young people participating in one of the most active youth programs in the state. Oakland County’s 4-H programs produce the highest quality market animals. The 4H program produces the outstanding citizens of tomorrow.
2. To purchase some of the best rabbits
3. As a buyer, you will have a buyers thank you sign posted in the livestock arena, the poultry barn or the rabbit barn.
After the sale, your name as a buyer may be submitted to local newspapers. Your name will appear in next year’s Fair Program Book and next year’s Auction Sale Catalog. You will receive a photograph of the 4-Her and the animal. To be in this photo please go to the photo area after you have the final bid on the animal. You will also receive a parking pass for the following year auction day and attendance at the Buyer’s Dinner.
How is payment handled?
You may pay cash, check or major credit card anytime during the sale or immediately following the sale. Please note that at the time of your sale checkout, collection will also be made for the processing and trucking fees. The processing fees will be posted in the sale catalog.
What do I do with it after I’ve purchased the animal?
The small animal auction provides trucking to processing for the poultry and rabbits. A refrigerated truck will return the packaged meat to the fairgrounds for buyers to pick up. The dates and times of this pickup are posted in the sale catalog. If you wish to take home your bird or rabbit, animals can leave the fairgrounds after settlement is made at the sale office.
